“More Than Math: Alexis’s Journey to Inspire the Next Generation”

CLEVELAND, OH— June 4, 2050 — her birthday — was more than a celebration for Alexis. It was the moment she reflected on a lifelong dream come true: becoming a teacher who made a difference.
Growing up in Maple Heights, Ohio, Alexis always wanted to be a teacher. But it wasn’t until her freshman year at Maple Heights High School that her dream took real shape—thanks to one unforgettable teacher, Ms. Cleveland.

“Before her, I was quiet, shy, and kept to myself,” Alexis recalled. “She made me feel confident, got me out of my shell, and helped me open up.”

Ms. Cleveland’s math class wasn’t just about numbers—it was about life. She’d share stories, including one that made the whole class laugh about growing up with chickens and roosters. But beyond the humor, Ms. Cleveland modeled what it meant to be kind, approachable, and real. Alexis said, “She didn’t make me feel mistreated—she made me feel seen.”

That same sense of belonging grew deeper when Alexis joined the Cleveland Freedom Project, a powerful, youth-led program dedicated to cultivating purpose, leadership, and possibility. In her first summer with the program, Alexis found community, confidence, and the courage to share her voice. Surrounded by mentors and peers who believed in her, she began to understand that her story—and her dream—mattered.

Years later, Alexis received a Best Teacher Award, honoring her own ability to inspire, uplift, and shape young minds. “I want my students to remember me as kind and helpful,” she said. “Someone who made them believe in themselves. Someone who maybe even inspired them to become teachers too.”

Her favorite quote—one she now shares with her students—is:
