CLEVELAND, OH — Hometown hero Damond is making NBA history — and the city that raised him couldn’t be prouder. In a headline-making playoff game, the Washington Wizards’ No. 1 draft pick scored 61 points against the Los Angeles Lakers, breaking the franchise record once held by Bradley Beal.

From the West Coast spotlight to the streets of Cleveland, everyone is talking about the kid who always said he’d be great — and proved it.

“This is just the start,” Damond said after the game. “I’ve always dreamed of this moment. Now that I’m here, I’m not going to fail.”

That dream started right here in Cleveland, during his time with the Cleveland Freedom Project, a summer leadership program where he first created a vision board, shared his goals, and found a community that believed in him. “That program helped me learn how to see my future clearly,” he said. “It gave me the push to keep working, even when things got hard.”

From a young age, Damond studied NBA legends and told anyone who would listen that he wanted to be remembered when people talk about the GOATs — the Greatest of All Time. Now, with a record-breaking game and a rising career, he’s proving he belongs in that conversation.

His performance has already inspired a new generation of Cleveland youth. “That’s what I want,” Damond said. “For kids back home to see what I did — and believe they can do it too.”
