“illusional.Arts”: Marrell Builds a Global Brand that Inspires Self-Expression

CLEVELAND, OH — What started as a school project between friends has grown into a worldwide movement in fashion — and it all began with a dream and a sample shirt.

Marrell, one of the original creators of the clothing brand illusional.Arts, is now known around the globe for his bold designs and even bolder mission: to help people express themselves through what they wear. “I came up with the name illusional.Arts because we wanted our clothes to show creativity, style, and meaning,” Marrell said. “It’s not just fashion — it’s a way to tell your story.”

Marrell helped build the brand from the ground up. He invested his own money into getting their very first product sample — a simple shirt — to make sure the quality was just right. “We needed to know what our product would feel like, look like, and if the manufacturer could really bring our vision to life,” he explained.

Once they saw the sample and knew it was good, they went all in. They posted on Instagram and TikTok, gaining attention fast. “People started liking our posts and asking to buy,” Marrell said. “That’s when we knew — this wasn’t just a dream anymore.”

Marrell’s journey was shaped in part by his experience in the Cleveland Freedom Project, where he was encouraged to turn creative ideas into real businesses. During the summer program, Marrell gained hands-on experience designing and making vinyl prints for T-shirts through Sears think[box] at Case Western Reserve University. “That experience helped me realize this was something I could actually do — not just dream about,” he said.

Marrell hopes to be remembered as more than just a business owner. “I want people to see illusional.Arts and feel free to be themselves. I want them to feel confident, creative, and proud.”

From a classroom brainstorm to a global fashion label, Marrell Robinson has stayed true to his original goal: helping others feel seen — one shirt at a time.
