About the Role
The Literacy Facilitator supports the book-based literacy component of the Cleveland Freedom Project’s summer program, helping create a joyful, culturally affirming, youth-centered learning environment.
This is not a traditional classroom role—facilitators serve as mentors and guides, helping young people build confidence, explore identity, and develop a love of reading through storytelling, discussion, and creative expression.
What You’ll Do
Facilitate Engaging Literacy Experiences

Lead interactive read-alouds, discussions, and creative literacy activities

Help youth connect stories to their lived experiences and communities

Support comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking
Support All Learners

Use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to engage youth at different reading levels

Adapt instruction through group work, visuals, storytelling, and hands-on activities

Create multiple ways for youth to express understanding (discussion, writing, art, performance)
Build Culture & Relationships

Create a safe, joyful, and high-expectations environment

Encourage participation from all youth, including reluctant readers

Foster leadership by inviting youth to co-lead and share their voices
Collaborate & Contribute

Work with program staff to align literacy with broader themes (identity, leadership, community)

Participate in team meetings and program activities

What You’ll Gain

Ideal Candidate

3rd–4th year undergraduate student (or equivalent experience)

Background or interest in public health, education, or social sciences

Passion for youth development, literacy, and equity

Strong communication and facilitation skills

Comfortable leading interactive, non-traditional learning experiences
